Packing the bike to fly

Packing the bike for travel is a bit of a hassle. Taking the bike on the aircraft is probably the safest way to ensure that the bike arrives in one piece.

To prepare the bike for shipment I did the following:

1) Remove the frame pump
2) Remove the water bottle cages and the fuel bottle cage (put screws back in the bike)
3) Remove rear and front lights
4) Remove computer – (reset for trip)
5) Remove pedals
6) Remove skewer from front wheel
7) Remove front wheel
8) Remove front fender zip tie to front wheel
9) Wrap the bike in pipe insulation

10) Remove handlebars and zip tied in under the top tub
11) Remove rear derailleur (not cable) and zip tie to chain stay
12) Zip tie the front wheel to the frame: zip tie seat to front rack: zip tie frame pump to frame
13) Build bike box using two bike boxes from shop. I wanted to leave the racks on to add additional stability.
